About Justin Smirk

Justin Smirk has almost 30 years of experience as a financial markets’ economist joining Westpac’s Economics team in 1999 following his training as an Economist at the Reserve Bank of Australia. His current focus is prices and inflation, wages, commodities, the Pacific Regional and the evolution of ESG issues and their macroeconomic impact.

Justin advises traders and dealers, institutional and corporate clients as well as small businesses. He spent time in Westpac’s London office and had a secondment as
Chief Economist at St George Bank. Justin was also a member of the advisory board to the Bureau of Resources and Energy Economics.

But there is more to Justin than the economist you see. Starting out as an apprentice electrician he went on to be a farm management consultant working on various farming ventures in the Western Australian wheat belt. His views on macroeconomics are grounded in tough times farming families faced in the late ‘80s.
