The company is renowned for after sales product support, and as a supplier of innovative technology solutions, from on board machine control and guidance solutions to machine fleet management including product health, machine productivity and operator safety. HISTORY OF SUPPLY The William Adams customer base spans generations of families and corporations from State and Local Government authorities, quarrying, building and construction, power generation, forestry and mining, on-highway transport, marine industries and agriculture. The company was established in 1884 in Melbourne, named after its founder, William Adams. Caterpillar was established in Illinois USA in 1925. The following year William Adams was appointed as a Caterpillar dealer in New South Wales and later in Victoria and Tasmania. It remains one of Caterpillars longest serving dealers in the world. In 1987 William Adams was acquired by Dale Elphinstone, who remains as Dealer Principal and Executive Chairman of the Elphinstone Group of Companies. William Adams employs approximately 600 people, 50% dedicated to after sales product support. The parent company of William Adams, Elphinstone, is headquartered in Burnie, Tasmania, with William Adams' headquarters in Clayton, Victoria. The Tasmanian headquarters are located in Somerset.
