Please support industry and jobs growth in Geelong

Tuesday, January 24, 2012

The Geelong Chamber seeks your help to support a $3.7mil funding application by the City of Greater Geelong to the Regional Development Australia Fund for infrastructure development within the Geelong Ring Road Employment Precinct.

See the attached links for a description of the project and a template letter addressed to City of Greater Geelong CEO, Stephen Griffin, that you can use to provide your support for this funding application.

We need as much support as possible from the business and general community to make this project a reality. In turn this project will generate thousands of jobs and attract significant new industry to the region.

Bill Johnsen, Senior Economic Development Officer with the City of Greater Geelong said:

“The City of Greater Geelong submitted an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the Elcho Infrastructure  Project for funding under Round Two of the Regional Development Australia Fund (RDAF) program. Regional Development Australia Barwon South West has assessed the Elcho Project as one of the priority projects to proceed to full application for funding under round two and a full application is to be submitted by February 15.

Your assistance is requested in the form of a letter of support for the application. The more support we have for the project the greater the chance of success. Similar Chamber support for the recent RIDF grant of $2M for the construction of O’Briens Road and Drainage was a factor in the success of that application.

The RADF application is for $3.7 M to construct the Elcho Drain and Drainage Basin  ($2.5 M) and the trunk sewerage and associated sewer pump station ($1.2 M)

The works will provide the essential drainage for the 250 hectare Elcho catchment within the GREP and is the basic infrastructure that will open this area up for development.

Council has been developing the $8 M drainage scheme for this area for some time and industry contribution would be via a special rates and charges scheme.

A successful application to RADF, along with other funding being sought, would substantially reduce the cost to industry in providing this essential infrastructure.

Council has already allocated $0.5M for the Elcho Project from the Local Government Infrastructure Program (LGIP) component of the  Regional Growth Fund RGF which provides regional councils with support to build new infrastructure. This has already reduced the funds required to $7.5 M.”
