The Chamber Seal

The seal devised by the Chamber in 1891 has remained unchanged other than the contraction in its name to The Geelong Chamber of Commerce in 1975. The seal is also the Chamber's logo. In a report to the Chamber early in 1933, the Honorary Secretary, Edward Bechervaise, explained the meaning of the parts of the seal:
"You will notice that its form is oval and the outer edge contains the name of the Chamber. The oval is divided into four quarters by a representative of a rope cable. The left hand top quarter shows a ship in full sail. The right hand top quarter shows a sheep. The lower left hand quarter shows a sheaf of wheat. The lower right hand quarter shows a box of butter.
Each one shows, in order, the various matters in which the Chamber is vitally interested in on behalf of the City and Port of Geelong viz. shipping, wool, wheat and frozen products. The seal and device of the original Chamber showed a figure of a woman holding the scales of justice, a ship, a bale of wool and a cask."
